While dedicated to a modern Art Deco style, the Sygnard company also focuses on the design of fascinating Art Deco sculptures. The Art Deco style sculptures we offer are captivating, stylized animal figurines which will be immediate eye-catchers in any interior space. Take a look beyond their modern decorative character to fully understand their classical Art Deco heritage.

The Art Deco style, introduced at the Exposition des Arts Decoratifs et Industriels Modernes in 1925, caused a frenzy and captured all sorts of artistic and decorative forms of the time. But it is not, of course, that the style started abruptly that year, it had precursors which were avantgarde in character already before. This was particularly true for the visual arts, for painting and for sculpture, where Cubism, Fauvism, and Futurism played a significant role:  Influential sculpturers, iconic names were for example: Demétre Chippers, Joseph Lorenzl, or Rene Lalique.

Typical of the fresh style were elongated forms, surprising shapes, clear lines, and standing figures. Female figures in all kinds of poses, mostly dancing, were à la mode – a sign of growing feminism. Materials mainly used in early Art Deco sculpture were Bronze and ivory, which were very popular and influential at first, covered with cold painting, and later silver, enamel, then also made of porcelain and marble.  The figures were often placed pedestal-like on an onyx base.

Soon the range was expanded to include modern materials like steel, or plastic, combined with some noble elements of ivory and horn. A main aspect of creation was throughout – like everywhere in other branches – a pursuit of extravagant elegance, worldliness. In colors like gold, silver, bronze, and black, the sculptures were enriched with new motifs.

The design artists of the Sygnard brand have picked up exactly this thread and continue it with a spirit of experimentation. Our latest series focusses on Art Deco animal sculpture, including different animal figures like a lion, a horse, and an owl. A Cubist approach in our statuettes is obvious, while we try out materials and forms at the same time. The clear lines of the figures are interrupted by cube-like edges, which  create a play of shadow and light on the sculpture, a seeming contradiction between the organic and edginess. The so created dynamic visually boosts the animal sculpture’s movement. Whether in silver or gold, or a Kintsugi version, a Sygnard  Art Deco sculpture will be a conversation and contemplation piece in your interior decoration, adding that extra sparkle! Can you imagine the Art Deco bird sculpture, for example, as an inspiration for you and your guests?

One more reminder for you: In Art Deco style the emphasis is primarily on geometric shapes, symmetry and premium, even exotic materials, which thus create a characteristic atmosphere.  Modern Art Deco boldly uses a combination of sharp edges and rounded shapes, almost provocative forms and clear but full colors. In Art Deco, accessories are particularly important, and they mostly have a striking form. They will inevitably convey an extra sense of luxury to the ambiance.
